How to Calculate the Prediction of Reproductive Efficiency for Heifers

Breeding Period - 20 day period during breeding season

Calving Period - 20 day period when cows calved

  • A)Enter the number of heifers that were born in each of the calving groups.
  • B) Enter a "1" if estrus will be synchronized in the heifers or a "0" if estrus will not be synchronized.
  • C) Enter the weight (lbs.) of the heifers at the start of the breeding period. (Remember to add the appropriate amount of weight based on ADG for each successive breeding period)
  • D) Enter the average birth date for each of the groups of heifers. (midpoint of 20 day period in which the heifers were born)
  • E) Enter the breeding date for each group (The first day of the breeding period).
  • F) Enter the percentage of animals that are cycling at the start of each breeding period (Percent of animals cycling is found on the heifer target weight information pages based on weight and age for each particular breed).
  • G) Enter the conception rate for each of the groups (Conception rates are given in the Management Information Section II; part B or Part D if estrus synchronized based on synchronization protocol and/or under the general heifer information).
  • H1) This number will be needed for the yearly economic summary. (total # heifers in the herd)
  • H2) This number will be needed for the yearly economic summary. (Total heifers pregnant at the end of breeding season)

  • H) Enter the date that the calves will be weaned.
  • I) Enter the birth weight for the calves born to heifers (Found under Management Information Section I; part I ).
  • J) Enter the average daily gain for the calves (Found under Management Information, Section I; part J, based on sex of calf).
  • K) If artificial insemination was used enter the additional pounds of calf weaned due to use of genetically superior sires (Found in the Management Information section II; part E ).
  • L) Enter the percent calf loss (Found in the Management Information Section II; part C).
